What To Expect
Every naturopathic doctor is unique in the way they practice and how they approach care. Let me tell you what you can expect when you begin your care with me.
Initial Appointment:
The first visit is often the most lengthy. This is because I will take the time to get a thorough history and to completely understand your goals. Please make sure to complete the intake form in full and bring any relevant lab work and blood testing results. There will also be physical examinations, such as blood pressure reading, body temperature, height and weight, etc and other examinations tailored to your concerns, such as an abdominal exam, reflex testing, and so forth. These are all crucial pieces of information required to look at the whole picture.
I will always encourage patients to be active in their care, so you will play an important role in deciding the course of treatment. You will leave your initial appointment feeling like you have been heard, and understand exactly what the short term and long term plan for your treatments will be.
Follow-up Appointments:
Your health goals and the type of treatment we will be doing will help determine your appointment time.
Generally, the first follow-up appointment is 45 minutes, and the subsequent follow ups are 30 minutes (depending on what you require). Thirty minute appointments are generally used for routine follow ups, physical medicine treatments, such as trigger point release or manipulations. A longer 60 minute appointment may be necessary if there are many things to be done in one visit. See the “Services” tab for a description of the different types of treatments offered.
There will be continual monitoring of your health. It is important to have markers to keep track of the progression of health and disease. This means in follow up appointments, additional physical examinations may be included, and additional lab testing could be necessary. As naturopathic services operate outside of the OHIP system, any lab work ordered by your naturopathic doctor will be at an additional cost.
All appointments:
I approach all patients with compassion and empathy. You’re in pain, you’re sick, and you aren’t feeling like yourself. You wish you didn’t have these restrictions on you, and wish you could do something about it. I will make it my mission to do what I can to help you be the best ‘you’.
I strongly believe the best care comes from a collaboration of all healthcare professionals involved in a patient’s health. I will work hard to form relationships with your existing healthcare providers. I operate from a complementary approach to care; in other words, I will not replace your family doctor, but will work with them. As an example, I am not “anti-antibiotics”. I believe there is a time and place for everything, and when necessary, I can do things to help mitigate their negative effects.
Medicine doesn’t work unless you take it. In the same way, your health won’t change unless you put in the change. If you plan on being a passenger on your health journey, this will not work. I am here to guide you through the process, but you put in the work. Any success that comes from treatment will come from you.
